The Global Business Traveler - What to Do About Health Insurance When Away from the U.S.
More and more of our clients find themselves travelling overseas for their businesses and wondering what would happen if they became sick while away from home. Travelling can bring many unpredictable situations that require medical care and you may need help in understanding unfamiliar cultures and medical systems.
While most group medical insurance plans will cover life-threatening emergencies while away from the U.S., they will not cover an illness that is not life-threatening. Here are some plans to consider:
TRAVEL MEDICAL INSURANCE
This is a temporary, short-term, per trip medical insurance policy while traveling outside the U.S. These plans can provide up to $2 million of medical coverage and can be obtained for a minimum of 5 days to a maximum of 2 years.
EXECUTIVE TRAVEL MEDICAL INSURANCE
This plan is for those who travel frequently outside the U.S. throughout the year. You can only be away from the U.S. for a maximum of 30-day increments at a time and must have coverage in the U.S. already in place. It provides up to $1 million of medical coverage with a $250 deductible for a cost of less than $20 a month.
GLOBAL MEDICAL INSURANCE
This plan is long-term and annually renewable for those who reside abroad and return to the U.S. temporarily. You must be outside the U.S. a total of six months in the year either incrementally or all at once. This long-term plan can provide up to $8 million of lifetime medical coverage.
